Shelby is an Occupational Therapist at Enable WA, based in Bridgetown, and works with people across the lifespan to support participation in everyday life and meaningful activities.

With a Master of Occupational Therapy from Curtin University, Shelby brings a thoughtful, person-centred approach to her work. She places strong importance on recognising and respecting each person’s individuality, ensuring therapy feels relevant, supportive and tailored.

Shelby especially enjoys working with children and young adults on the autism spectrum. She is passionate about meeting people where they’re at, and helping them build on their strengths to achieve goals that matter to them.

We’re so excited to introduce Jane to the Lower South West community, bringing with her over 35 years of experience as a Certified Practising Speech Pathologist.

Jane has worked across regional Western Australia with both adults and children, and over the past decade has developed a strong focus in the disability sector. She has particular expertise in communication supports, including AAC, and is known for her innovative, person-centred approaches that have gained recognition nationally.

With advanced training in complex communication needs, Key Word Sign, Hanen “More Than Words,” and as a Prompt Clinician, Jane brings a wealth of knowledge, but it’s her warmth and approachability that truly stand out.

Jane is passionate about creating a safe, supportive space where clients feel understood. She takes the time to build genuine relationships with the people she works with, as well as their families and support teams, so communication goals can be developed together in a way that truly fits each individual.

Jane is based in Busselton and is looking forward to supporting people across the Lower South West.

What does choice and control actually mean? 🤔

It’s a phrase we hear a lot in the NDIS, but in real life it can look pretty simple.

It means you get a say in what your support looks like.
- Who supports you.
- How your day is structured.
- And what feels right for you.

It also means things can be adjusted when they’re not working because your needs, preferences, and energy can change from day to day.

For some people, choice and control might look like:
• Choosing a support worker you feel comfortable with
• Deciding what goals matter most to you
• Having a say in how and when support happens
• Being involved in decisions, not just informed about them

At its core, it’s about making sure support actually fits the person - not the other way around. This is something we really pride ourselves on, so if you're ready for support that's matched to you, come and have a chat!

At the Gracetown Cowaramup Bay Community Easter Swim, our accessible beach matting helped make the day more accessible for many people. Competitors, spectators, families with prams, toddlers, and those recovering from injury or managing mobility challenges all moved more freely across the sand.

People of all ages used the matting, from little ones to those in their 90s, and it made a real difference to how the day was experienced.

We were also lucky to have Paralympic gold medallist Katrina Porter there, who placed second in her age group and made the most of the access, swimming every day the matting was down.

A big thank you to the volunteers and organisers who made the event run so smoothly, and to everyone who helped lay and pack up the matting.

Access matters, and it is great to see what is possible when it is prioritised!

World Health Day feels like a good reminder that there can be barriers to getting to appointments, being understood, and getting what you need from health care. And for a lot of people, that part isn’t always straightforward.

For Participants
This is where support workers can make a real difference:
• Helping you get to and from appointments safely and on time
• Going with you so you don’t have to navigate it alone
• Helping explain what the appointment is for, and what’s been said afterwards
• Supporting communication so you can share what’s going on in a way that feels right for you
• Being another set of ears when things move too fast or feel overwhelming

For carers and support workers 🌿
You’re often the bridge that helps things happen:
• Getting people to appointments safely and calmly
• Helping make sense of information afterwards
• Speaking up when something doesn’t feel right
• Trying to juggle it all without burning out yourself

At the end of the day, good health care only really works when people can actually access it.

April 2 — World Autism Awareness Day

We recognise that the word “awareness” can mean different things to different people.
But it can also be a starting point for understanding, and understanding helps create inclusion.

We learn more when we take the time to listen and reflect. This helps people feel seen, respected, and supported. At Enable WA, we support all neurodiverse individuals. Everyone is welcome exactly as they are.

Today is a reminder to keep learning. Keep listening. Keep showing up for one another, and to accept one another for the unique ways we all experience the world.

We're very excited to be seeing more and more inclusive activities, events, shopping hours, gaming sessions and social celebrations happening throughout WA. We’d like to share a brief update regarding fuel and travel across Australia.

There are some ongoing national pressures affecting fuel availability and costs, and the Australian Government has also announced a temporary reduction in fuel excise from 1 April 2026 to help ease pressure.

👉 For Enable WA participants and families, this may mean some small adjustments to how supports are delivered in the community over the coming period. Our focus remains on ensuring continuity of care while also being mindful of unnecessary travel where possible.

Where appropriate, we may:

✅ Encourage more local community-based activities close to home
✅ Use alternative ways of delivering support where suitable
✅ Coordinate schedules to reduce travel where it does not impact participant outcomes

Please be assured that 𝙖𝙡𝙡 𝙨𝙚𝙧𝙫𝙞𝙘𝙚𝙨 𝙬𝙞𝙡𝙡 𝙘𝙤𝙣𝙩𝙞𝙣𝙪𝙚, and your support team will communicate directly if any changes are needed for your individual supports.
